What it means for Your Puppy

When choosing a Schnauzer puppy, you may notice differences in their nose color, paw pads, and eye rims. These features are determined by pigment, which is set by the genes inherited from both parents and stays the same for life.

Here's How It Works...

Every Schnauzer inherits one of two pigment types, which determine the color of their nose, lips, eye rims, and paw pads. This pigment is present at birth and will always stay the same!

🐾 If a puppy inherits B/B or B/b, they will have black pigment.

Black-pigmented Schnauzers will always have black noses, black paw pads, and dark eye rims.
This pigment type is found in Black, Salt & Pepper, and Black & Silver Schnauzers.

🐾 If a puppy inherits b/b, they will have liver pigment.

Liver-pigmented Schnauzers (sometimes called Chocolate Schnauzers) will always have brown noses, brown paw pads, and lighter eye rims.
This pigment type is found in Liver, Liver Pepper, and Liver Parti Schnauzers.

Super Coat

A denser, silkier version of the traditional coat. Schnauzers with super coats tend to have a soft texture while maintaining a slightly structured feel. These coats are easier to maintain than traditional wiry coats and have a plush look.

Mega Coat (Ultra Super Coat)

This is the thickest and most luxurious coat type found in Schnauzers. The soft, flowing texture gives a fluffy, elegant appearance. Mega coats require regular grooming to prevent matting but are highly sought after for their stunning, full-bodied look.

Traditional Coat (Double Coat)

The classic Schnauzer coat consists of a wiry outer layer and a soft undercoat. This coat type was originally bred for protection against harsh weather and dirt, making it practical for working dogs. It requires hand-stripping or clipping to maintain its characteristic appearance. (Lap Happy Schnauzers does not produce traditional/wiry coats)

Coat Colors & Patterns

Miniature Schnauzers come in a variety of colors, some recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and others classified as rare or non-traditional. While only certain colors are accepted for conformation showing, all are eligible for AKC registration.

Traditional Black

A deep, rich black coat that remains consistent across the entire body. Occasionally, some may have snips of white on the chest, neck or toes. (Nose, paw pads, and eye rims are always black.)

Liver (Chocolate)

Rich brown coat with brown nose, paw pads, and eye rims. No black pigment.

Red (Wheaten)

A warm golden tan to reddish coat with liver pigment (brown nose, paw pads, and eye rims). Sometimes called Wheaten in Schnauzers, though it varies from the Wheaten color in other breeds. Shades range from light cream to deep rust and may lighten with age.

Traditional White

Pure white coat with black or brown pigment on the nose, paw pads, and eye rims.

White Chocolate - A variation of traditional white where the dog has a brown nose, eye rims, and paw pads instead of black.

Black & Silver

Black body with silver or white furnishings on the eyebrows, beard, legs, and underbelly.

Liver & Cream

Brown body with light cream furnishings, giving a softer contrast than traditional tan points.

Liver & Tan

Brown body with tan or cream furnishings on the eyebrows, beard, and legs.

Black & Tan (Rare)

Similar to Black & Silver but with tan or rust-colored furnishings instead of silver/white.

Salt & Pepper

The Salt & Pepper coat pattern shares similarities with the Black & Silver variety, featuring distinct white or silver markings. However, its primary coat color is agouti, meaning each individual hair strand is banded with multiple shades. In conformation show dogs, the coat is hand-stripped to maintain the proper banded appearance. When a Salt & Pepper Schnauzer is clipped instead of stripped, their coat may appear to shift in color between grooming sessions. This variation in shade can range from a deep charcoal gray to a bright platinum silver. Interestingly, Salt & Pepper puppies are often born with a brownish hue, which gradually transforms into their mature coloring as they grow.

Brown-toned version of salt & pepper with chocolate-tipped hairs and lighter brown banding.

Agouti (Wolf Sable)

Multi-shaded coat where each hair is banded with different colors, giving a wild "wolf-like" appearance.

Black Parti

White coat with large or small patches of solid black. Random spotting.

Liver Parti

White coat with liver (brown) spots. Brown nose and lighter eye rims.

Salt & Pepper Parti

White coat with scattered salt & pepper patches. Lighter and darker banded hairs.

Liver Pepper Parti

White coat with liver pepper markings and chocolate-tipped banded hairs.

Ticking & Roan

Ticking refers to small speckles of color within white areas, while roan is a more blended, "frosted" appearance where dark and light hairs are evenly interspersed.

Agouti (Wild-Type Banding)

A natural banding pattern where each hair contains multiple shades of color. Unlike salt & pepper, which has contrast between dark and light areas, agouti coats appear blended and wolf-like, with a more natural, rustic look.

Parti (White + Any Other Color)

A pattern where a white base coat is mixed with large or small patches of another color. This pattern can appear in black & white, liver & white, salt & pepper parti, and more.

Phantom

A coat pattern where light markings appear in specific locations, similar to how a Doberman has distinct tan markings.

Dilution

Understanding the "Fading Gene"

When reviewing genetic testing results, such as those from Embark, you may see terms like dilute (dd) or non-dilute (DD). This refers to a specific genetic trait that influences how dark or light a Schnauzer’s coat color appears.
